Nomad’s fast food

What does this picture look like to you?

This is known as Flour Tea. Made by frying flour in Shar Tos/Mongolian butter oil (read my article about it here) , then adding bits of the boiled green tea on to the fried flour, stirring constantly. Once small bits of flour take form, add the milk like you would any regular milk tea.

In nomadic times, this was considered fast food. Something to whip up fast and eat before going herding or running errands. In my case, my grandma used to make this for me for breakfast when I was little, and since then I’ve developed a taste for it. I can’t make it myself so I now have to beg my grandma to make it whenever I can visit her.

The actual recipe is used with sheep tail’s fat instead of Shar tos. You get more flavor that way, but I personally never liked sheep’s tail so I prefer the shar tos version.
